After the founding of the monastery of St Gallen by the first abbot Saint Otmar in 719 the abbey of St Gallen with its unparalleled library developed into a cultural center in Europe in the 9th and 10th
centuries. Following WWII the city recovered from a serious economic crisis with the boom causing the population to grow to more than 80,000 in 1970. In 1970 the service sector became larger than the textile industry for the first time since the Middle Ages. The city remains renowned throughout the world for its textiles and embroidery is much sought after and an intrinsic part of the city. The fashion company AKRIS underlines this tradition and is one of the most important clothing manufacturers in present day Switzerland. The club FC St. Gallen was founded in 1879 and is therefore one of the oldest football clubs in Switzerland and together with KB in Copenhagen, the oldest football club in continental Europe. In 2008 the club moved from the historically-charged Espenmoos location in the eastern part of the city to the new multi-functional AFG Arena – now kybunpark, with a capacity of 19,500 spectators. The best sporting days of the St Gallen team were only 15 years ago. At that time under the former manager of the Austrian national team Marcel Koller the team from eastern Switzerland secured the second championship title in their club's history. Following this achievement things went continuously downhill from a sporting point of view. Shortly before moving to the new stadium in the west of the city the FCSG was relegated to the second division. After direct promotion the next relegation to the Challenge League followed only two seasons later. Under the new president Dölf Früh the city club was able to regain consistency - in both a sporting and financial sense. The biggest success following this difficult period was the participation in the group phase of the Europa League in the 2013/2014 season. Last season the first team managed sixth position in the Swiss Raiffeisen Super League. FC St. Gallen 1879, Gewinner U19 Turnier, Altstätten 2018 With respect to work in the sphere of up-and-coming young talent FC St. Gallen has built up a lot in cooperation with FC Wil. With the "Future Champs Ostschweiz" (FCO) the two clubs have developed an extremely interesting project for working with young talents in the whole of the region.
The town St. Gallen is the eighth largest city in Switzerland and at the same time the capital of the canton of the same name. The city had a population of just over 79,000 in 2013 and is 700 metres above sea level. The population increased in 2013 for the fifth year in succession. The name St. Gallen is dates back to Saint Gallus an Irish Monk and hermit who was the first to move into the uninhabited area in the year 612.
