The City
Altstätten is a lively small
town in the heart of the St.
Gallen Rhine Valley, at the
foot of the Appenzell hills.
The lowest point is 410
metres above sea level,
while the highest point, the
famous Hoher Kasten mountain, is 1,795 metres above sea level.
At the time of its first documented mention in 853, the Abbey of
St. Gallen had extensive holdings in Altstätten (then known as
‘villa altsteti’ – courtyard of the old site). To protect the territory
against the Counts of Montfort, who were settled across the
Rhine, Abbot Berchtold von Falkenstein fortified the Altstätten
estate with a ring wall – at this point, in 1298, the place was
elevated to town status. In the 18th century, Altstätten
experienced an economic boom with the manufacture of textiles
and trade.
Many energetic families acquired solid wealth and created jobs –
it is thanks to these families that Baroque stately buildings and
historic arcades were built, which still characterise the townscape
today and are charming reminders of the past. Altstätten now
has around 11,000 inhabitants and forms the centre of the
region.
Around 150 clubs and traditions,
such as carnival and various
markets, contribute to the town's
lively atmosphere. A considerable
number of companies are based in
Altstätten. Around 6,700 people are
currently employed in over 720 businesses, ranging from global
high-tech companies to small farms. The municipality of
Altstätten comprises

The Club
The majority of the team is made up of players from FC
Altstätten's current A-junior team. Reinforcements are recruited
from clubs between Rüthi and Au. After various meetings and
trial training sessions, the squad for the tournament is then
selected.
In 2008, the team achieved its best result to date, finishing in 5th
place in its 6th appearance. Except for its 8th appearance in 2012
(6th place), the team has always had to fight to avoid finishing
bottom of the table. However, the ranking is not the main focus
for FC Altstätten, but rather the opportunity to compete and
measure themselves against colleagues from the region in top-
level international football. Not least because of this, the
atmosphere and motivation to play in this team are very high.
Former FC Altstätten players repeatedly mention participation in
the International U19 Football Tournament as a highlight of their
careers.
The players of FC Altstätten are released from their home clubs
for the duration of the International U19 Football Tournament,
meaning they do not take part in their home clubs' official
championship matches on the tournament weekend.
