The City
Odense is a large city on the Danish island of Funen with a
population of around 180,000, making it the third largest city in
Denmark. The locals are called Odenseans, as the River Odense A
flows through the city.
It is connected to Odense Fjord via the Odense Canal. The city
was first mentioned in a document in 988. Officially founded in
1355, the city lies 13 metres above sea level.
The city in Scandinavia has many attractions. These include
numerous museums as well as the cathedral, the Gothic St.
Canute's Church from the 14th century.
Odense is home to shipbuilding, electrical, textile and food
industries, including the electric motor manufacturer Thirge
Titan, the Albani Brewery and Odense Marcipan. The city is also
home to the headquarters of Denmark's second television
station, TV 2. In 2017, Mark Zuckerberg announced that
Facebook's eighth data centre would be built in Odense. Odense
Airport is located about 12 kilometres outside the city. The city is
also a stop on the Intercity train between Copenhagen and
Jutland.
The city's leading football club is the Superliga club Odense BK.
Since 2000, the H. C. Andersen Marathon, one of Scandinavia's
largest marathons, has been held in the autumn.
The Club
Odense BK has won a total of three Danish league titles (1977,
1982 and 1989) and five cup victories – the last cup success
dates back to 2007. These successes mark the heyday of the
club, especially in the period between 1975 and 1990, when OB
was one of Denmark's leading clubs.
In 1998, the club was relegated to the second division – a setback
after decades of success. However, the club fought its way back
and celebrated two more cup triumphs after being promoted
again. For decades, OB dominated top-flight football in Denmark
and was almost always represented in the top division.
OB also attracted international attention: the 1994/95 season
was particularly memorable, when the club qualified for the
UEFA Cup and, against all expectations, eliminated the top
German club 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the second round with one
more away goal. Most recently, the club reached the group stage
of the UEFA Europa League in the 2011/12 season.
The 2023/24 season marked a turning point: OB was relegated
from the first division – a setback that hurts in its history. But the
club responded impressively: just one year later, it achieved
direct promotion, demonstrating determination and character.
One ray of hope remains the strong youth development
programme: by winning the U19 tournament in 2022 and 2024,
OB impressively demonstrated that young talent is being
nurtured and invested in for the future. The club is thus showing
that development and continuity can go hand in hand.
